Discover an authentic East Slavic wooden town dating back to the 13th century at Berestye Archeological Museum. The Belarusian academy of archaeologists worked on the excavations of the 1,800 sq m (19,375 sq ft) site from 1968 until 1981. Walk along the three main streets and see the remnants of houses, barns, and craftspeople's workshops. The museum features 28 log cabins and many artifacts dating back to the 10th and 14th centuries. Browse through a number of everyday items made of iron, leather, and fabric. A huge modern pitched roof made of concrete, glass, and aluminum shields the site. • The Archeological museum is actually a covered dig of the medieval elm. In the area of today's fortress, there used to be a wooden medieval city, with small chalets and churches. To build a larger fortress in later times, a blaze was planted in which this ancient city was burned to the ground. Today, in the excavations of that city, a glass building that is actually a museum is built. The exhibition is small and there is not much to see.

  • It was fascinating to see these archaeological ruins, and to understand how people lived centuries ago.  more »
