Saint Euphrosyne Monastery, Polotsk

See a replica of the famous cross of St. Euphrosyne--a national symbol lost during World War II. The six-armed golden cross, decorated with enamel and precious stones, served as an ark for the storage of Christian relics. The monastery bears the name of its patron--the daughter of a prince of Polotsk and one of the 15 patron saints of Belarus. Learn about the life of this 12th-century nun who built churches, transcribed books, promoted literacy, and sponsored art. The remains of St. Euphrosyne were transferred from Kiev to this monastery, which she founded in 1910. The monastery also features a late-19th-century neo-Byzantine cathedral.
