Learn about regional history by exploring archaeological remains, numismatics, ancient weapons, and Masonic items in the Local Lore Museum at City Hall (Ratusha). The building itself has a colorful history--it served as a watchtower, a court, and a bank. It also hosted the city administrative board. Enter the foyer and see a 2 m (6.5 ft) tall bronze coat of arms of Vitebsk--placed as a memorial to partisans who were hanged in front of the hall during World War II. The museum features nearly 200,000 artifacts. Look for a 13th-century birch-bark letter, a 17th-century silver knight’s belt, and 19th-century weapons from the Napoleonic Wars.
