Red Star Line Museum, Antwerp

Sharing the story of immigrants and crew, Red Star Line Museum reveals that the Red Star passenger boats were more than just a line of pleasure ships. The museum documents the rise of the ocean liner and the Red Star company, beginning with its founder Clement Griscom. However, the focus is on the many people that left Antwerp's port headed for New York City. Before the museum opened its doors, a team of researchers tracked the families of almost two million passengers and collected their stories, all of which are showcased in the exhibits. On your visit you'll journey with the immigrants escaping the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, as well as get a taste of traveling in style with famous passengers like Albert Einstein. Only 90 people are allowed into the exhibits every 30 minutes, so there may be a wait on your arrival. Advanced reservations are recommended. Red Star Line Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Antwerp Edition.

  • We visited the museum with our association, because in November 2019 we bring the stage version of the story of a Red Star Line ship. We booked guides and those were not only on time, but even something too early. Each of them inspired guides who were very fascinating about the stories of the people who wanted to try their luck in America. Many interactive possibilities in the museum. Because the guide told me an hour and a half, we could not listen to all the individual stories or see everything in detail so we will definitely come back. Afterwards a nice snack eaten in the museum café. Top!

  • Museum dedicated to European emigration to Canada and the US in the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is in the old Red Star Line building where the emigrants were processed. The exhibits are very well curated and the self-guided tour takes you through the complete journey people undertook starting sometimes as far as the Ukraine. Especially interesting for those who have also visited Ellis Island where the journey ended.
  • If you're interested in local history, this museum is for you. As part of the tour you will read and hear about different people who undertook the long boat journey to the USA at the end of the 19th or the start of the 20th century. Their stories come alive and are brought into focus by the addition of more recent stories of migration. I've visited a few times and every time I have discovered something new. You're walking through a lovely, at times baffling collection of emigration stories. Stories about who we were and who we are.
