Groot Begijnhof, Leuven

#2 of 69 in Things to do in Leuven
Must see · Historic Site · Architectural Building
Wander the completely restored historic district at Groot Begijnhof, now used by the local university as housing and classrooms. Made up of 12 cobbled streets cutting through rows of brick buildings, the area is popular for walking tours that allow you to admire the dormers, gables, and statuary decorating the buildings. A Gothic church is the neighborhood's centerpiece--go inside to see the 14th-century murals revealed during a 1980s restoration project. Keep your camera ready for the views from the many canal bridges that cross the waterways into the district, and to capture images of some of the 300 buildings. • I was for a short time there. The place is really nice and clean. You enjoy walking there and taking pictures. I enjoyed very much.  more »
  • Bery nice, old, quite neighbourhood that used to be the home of unmarried women but is not home to students and teachers of the local university. Very tranquil.  more »
  • Stunning, historical and accessible place where your feel like you've walked back in time to a medieval town. Beautiful architecture and leaded glass along with quiet cobblestone streets, a church and water features. I believe they have tours but I didn't take one. Highly recommended!
  • Very beautiful place to be, very quiet as well
