Chacaltaya, La Paz

Ascend Chacaltaya, an impressive mountain in the Cordillera Real, one of the main ranges in the Bolivian Andes. With an elevation of 5,421 m (17,785 ft), the towering peak offers a challenge for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. Head up the mountain road, enjoying extensive views of the range as you curl up the mountain. Home to what was once the highest ski area in the world--now abandoned, with the affects of global warming reducing the skiable area over the years--and an observatory, the mountain road offers a good route into the area for amateur mountaineers, as the walk from the road to the summit is relatively short. • We hired the tour with the company Buhos Tours that led us to Mount Chacaltaya in a well-preserved van, but that did not stop the heart beating stronger on the road because of the precipices! However, qnd we come to the site passes all fear with such beauty! We climbed up to the first peak, with a lot of shortness of breath because of the 5,400 altitude! Recommend the Tour! Oh, the bathroom there is awful dirty and stinks, I could not use!!!

  • I went on my second day in Bolivia and I didn't get to the top, I was afraid to go bad and spoil my vacation. But my husband who is asthmatic has succeeded... I think with a little effort and taking breaks to catch my breath, everyone can! The place is very beautiful, it was the first time I saw snow, it is very exciting. About transportation and roads: I don't think companies are reckless because it's the only way to get to the mountain. We paid 130 bol per person in the HanaqPacha company, but the company Maya Tours charged 70 bol, so it is worth to give a search. The toilets are really dirty, there is no water for unloading and not for washing your hands, you can smell the pee from the bathroom. But it's part of it. I'd say it's an unmissable ride.

  • Beautiful views. The summit is just over 5300m. You will feel like you are on the top of the world. The mountain is reached via a 1 hour drive along a very narrow, bumpy, single-lane road, stopping close to the top. It’s then a short 15 minute walk to the summit.
  • I liked it because you could drive most of the way there or you can choose to Trek from as low a starting point as you want and it's easy to follow the road all the way up. It is quite high so be prepared for a headache if you've not acclimatised. The drive from La Paz is about 40 minutes and there's lots of providers in the tour agencies and hostels. Offers great views of Huayna Potosi as well as illimani and near the horizon you can make out nevado sajama, parinacota and lake Titicaca
