Cape Kaliakra, Dobrich

4.5
#1 of 12 in Beaches in Bulgaria
Watch dolphins, cormorants, and pinnipeds from the steep coast of Cape Kaliakra, where vertical cliffs reach 70 m (230 ft) down to the sea. This nature preserve features the remnants of fortified walls, a water main, baths, and a residence of the despot Dobrotitsa. At the entrance to the cape, see an obelisk called the Gate of the 40 Maidens. According to legend, the maidens tied their hair together and jumped into the sea to escape the Ottoman hordes. You can see the fortress that allegedly guarded the treasuries of Lyzimah, the successor to Alexander the Great. An archaeological park called Bulgarian Troy is on the big island in the nearby lake. • An interesting place with steep rocky shores. Entry is paid, but inexpensive. One of the must-see places on Bulgaria's northern coast.
