Xi'an Bell Tower, Xi'an

4.1
A grand construction of wood and brick, Xi'an Bell Tower stands as the city's most iconic landmark and one of the largest of its kind in the nation. Built in 1384 during the Ming Dynasty, the tower looms 40 m (131 ft) high and sits atop a massive stone foundation. Once rung to herald the beginning and the end of the day, the tower features a pagoda-like design, complete with a triple stack of roof awnings. Note the curved edges of the roofs, which helped strengthen the building during earthquakes. You may also hear about a local legend during your visit--according to the tale, the tower serves as the anchor attached to a restless, subterranean dragon. • Both the bell and drum towers, within walking distance, are at night ciuing are really impressive. Visiting them when they are already lit gives a special magic to the whole visit. The promenade is also very lively, there are parks, fountains and lots of life.

  • Because it is in the middle of the roads, it is only accessible through underpasses from the shopping mall next to the drum tower. You can find the entry by paying attention to the English directions around the corners of the underpasses. It's really hard to find. This place has just been arranged underpass. If you buy a combined ticket to the bell tower, with the drum tower, 50 yuan per person. The large flower shapes at the entrance are made, the garden layout is great. There's only one bell left. The ceiling and wall patterns in it are beautiful. You can go up to the 3rd floor and see some items from the imperial times. The view from the third floor is also good. You can also see the drum tower right across the street.

  • Great view, lots of security (I got one to hold my bag for the visit!) but if you tap gently 3 times on the biggest drum at exactly 4:30 pm, a dragon will swoop down and burn out the entire city. I don't really want that to happen again because I was spanked 69 times.
  • A wooden tower built during the Ming Dynasty right in the centre of Xi'an. Full of history and visually spectacular.
