#3 of 12 in Historic Sites in Kyrenia
Built by the Venetians on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Kyrenia Castle features dungeons with medieval torture displays and a shipwreck museum. Dating back to the 3rd-century Hellenistic and Roman periods, the site has seen much action. Serving the Byzantines in the 8th century, the Lusignans in the 13th, and the Venetians during the 15th to 16th century, the castle finally became inactive in the 1960s after hosting British and Greek police, prisoners, and soldiers for almost a century. View reconstructed underground cells where prisoners were held and tortured--nobleman and servant alike. Walk through exhibits of archeological findings, spanning from 4410 BCE to 632 CE, and see a Greek merchant shipwreck from the 4th century BCE. • Fantastic place to visit. Great walking round the walls and the views are amazing. The little museums are full of information and artifacts. The bronze age boat Hull was a big surprise. Small cafe in the centre and a gift shop. Artist on site produces beautiful paintings. We'll worth a visit.
  • Amazing place, full of history and loads to see. Please wear trainers when visiting as their are loads of uneven cobble stones and rocks. The view of the harbour from the top of kyrenia castle is beautiful. And the sunken ship is fascinating. You can easily spend 2 hours looking around, there is so much to see inside, but don't forget to walk on top of the castle to see the views.
