Head to Frederiksborg Castle to explore the lavish rooms and lush gardens of past Danish royalty, now transformed into the area's national history museum. The oldest parts of the castle were built by Frederick II in 1560, but the majority of what remains today was constructed by Christian IV in the early 1600s. Walk the grounds of the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia to see fountains, sculptures, hedges, and a variety of flowers and other foliage. The castle is in the middle of Palace Lake and stretches across three small islands. Check out the large Baroque chapel, the lavishly decorated rooms, the Great Hall and Throne Room, and the contemporary Danish art collection housed inside. A small cafe in the garden is an ideal place to sit down and grab a coffee while taking in great views of the palace. Plan your visit to Frederiksborg Castle and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Hillerod trip planner.

  • This castle is a really worth to pay a visit. The building is nice to see. But there is also much to see about the history of Denmark. Many paintings and furniture. Too much to see in one day. You can visit the park as well this is for free.
  • Nice place with beautiful art and lots of history. They should, however, have more lights inside the castle. The place is pretty dark and it's hard to even see the paintings sometimes. Never went to a museum so dark in my life!
