Jufureh, North Bank Division

#3 of 11 in Historic Sites in Gambia
Visit a predominantly Islamic village on the Gambia River at Jufureh--a popular tourist attraction due to its preserved colonial structures and Alex Haley's celebrated novel "Roots." The site once served as the departure point for British, Dutch, French, and pirate trade ships packed with gold, ivory, and slaves. Explore the ruins of forts, trading posts, and improvised slave dungeons, as well as a museum with a replica slave ship. Note that most of the ruins suffer from gradual decay due to coastal erosion, which washes away their foundations. • If you were looking for Gambia, take the trouble and head to the village of Jufureh. Even the way to get there by ferry from Banjul to Barry and on by car overland is an experience. However, this tour should only be done with an experienced guide. At the pirogen investor in Juffure, the information centre invites you first with impressive elements that impressively convey the time of the slave trade with its cruel circumstances. This is followed by a short crossing to the 5 km off the coast in the Gambia River Kunta Kinteh Island (until 2011 James Island, originally St. Andreas Island). The island, with a tiny speed of just 0.34 hectares, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and steeped in history. The island, initially used for the gold and elf trade, vividly documents the West African slave trade as a historical site. The former fortress of St. James is now only partially preserved, some has already been swallowed up by the water.
