Iglesia de La Merced, Antigua

2.3
#6 of 15 in Historic Sites in Antigua
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. • La Merced is a gorgeous church on the north side of Antigua that is painted a mustard yellow in colour and has incredibly intricate and impressive architecture. This church was definitely one of my favourites in Antigua and it is a fantastic place to take some photos. On the weekends local vendors set up shop around the church and sell street food, ice cream and colourful handicrafts. This church is a must-see when in Antigua!
  • Well worth stopping and going into the church. Built in the 1600's very beautiful.
