Catedral Metropolitana, Guatemala City

4.4
#1 of 9 in Historic Sites in Guatemala City
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
From your first sight of Catedral Metropolitana, you'll be impressed by the striking and majestic facade. Its strength and majesty is not just cosmetic; the building, constructed in baroque and neoclassical styles, has withstood numerous earthquakes over the years. Today it serves as the main church for Guatemala City, having been consecrated in 1817. Inside the cathedral, look for the 12 pillars dedicated to the memory of the thousands of people who disappeared during the violence of the country’s internal armed conflict, which lasted from 1960 to 1996. • A beautiful Spanish style cathedral which has been immaculately maintained over the years. Occupies a major portion of a large square where locals typically hang out; worth a visit if in the area.
  • Since it’s a holy place, let’s be honest and admit it is far more impressive outside than inside.
