Pantheon, Rome

4.7
#2 of 13,107 in Historic Sites in Italy
Nearly 2,000 years old, Pantheon is the only building from the Greco-Roman world that has remained substantially intact and in continuous use throughout its long history. A marvel of ancient architecture, it still boasts the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. Originally designed to be a temple to all the gods of the ancient Rome, the site has been used as a Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary, since the seventh century. The building features large, granite Corinthian columns. Don't skip this site if it's raining; seeing and hearing the rain pouring into this ancient building through the hole in the ceiling is a special experience. • Awesome place to visit. Easy to get into and though crowded, not that hard to move around inside surprisingly. Altars inside are beautiful and with it being an active church, there are still services ...  more »
  • What a beautiful old building! It is magnificent but I wouldn’t go in the busy months as it is so crowded. However, I would not have wanted to miss this gem.  more »

  • Amazing building. Jaw dropping when first seen and even the second time. The amazing historical architecture and the well preserved building makes this a must visit in Rome. Going here makes me fall in love with history once more. You will be amazed when you enter. You will find that even with 200s of people going in you will be amazed it's not crowded in speech. You can almost hear everyone speak but not loud. Keep in mind you will need a little bit of love for the history to keep you there for longer then 20 mins.
  • Jaw Dropping. It is incredible to look at the 40' tall solid granite columns on the outside and imagine how they put them in place 2000 years ago. The entire structure is so amazing from the marble sloped floor to the open dome. We used the Rick Steve's audio tour, which provided great insights.
