Itsukushima Shrine Torii, Hatsukaichi

Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (popularly known as Miyajima), best known for its "floating" torii gate. It is in the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. The shrine complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Japanese government has designated several buildings and possessions as National Treasures.HistoryItsukushima jinja was the chief Shinto shrine of Aki Province. The shrine has been destroyed several times, but the first shrine buildings were probably erected in the 6th century. The present shrine dates from the mid-16th century, and is believed to follow an earlier design from the 12th century. That design was established in 1168, when funds were provided by the warlord Taira no Kiyomori. The shrine was "devoted to the worship of goddesses to whom Kiyomori owed thanks, he felt, for his success in life." Originally it was a pure Shinto shrine "where no births or deaths were allowed to cause pollution. Its treasures include the celebrated Heike Nōkyō, or 'Sutras dedicated by the Taira House of Taira'. These consist of thirty-two scrolls, on which the Lotus and other sutras have been copied by Kiyomori, his sons, and other members of the family, each completing the writing of one scroll. Kiyomori lavished great wealth upon Itsukushima, and he liked to show the place to his friends and colleagues, or even to royal personages..." The shrine was designed and built on pier-like structures over the bay so that it would appear to be floating on the water, separate from the sacred island, which could be approached by the devout.

  • Whilst I am sure that the Torii shrine is very beautiful normally it is currently completely covered in plastic sheeting and you can hardly see it at all-I understand that this will remain the case fo...  more »
  • Miyajima's symbol is a red torii built in the sea, but the current torii was built in 1875, and more than 140 years later, damage and aging have progressed, and the kai renovation work began in the middle of June this year. It was covered with a sheet and I couldn't see him. Construction will take until August 2020, and you will not be able to see the red torii, the symbol of Miyajima, for the next year.

  • Travel Tip: Try to be on the island during both high and low tide. At high tide the shrine is floating in the water and at low tide you can walk out on the sand and almost touch the shrine. There are enough hike and attractions to do this and it will be worth your time as the shrine is a completely different experience at both of those times
  • Apart from the shrine being under construction and it being low-tide, this shrine was beautiful and there were rituals occurring when I arrived. Probably best to go at High-tide times as I did not get the “shrine floating on water” effect.
