Hikone Castle, Hikone

Enjoy a visit to the complex of Hikone Castle, hailed as being one of the best preserved castles in Japan. The castle, largely intact since its completion in 1622, sits perched on a hilltop overlooking Lake Biwa. Admire the historic building, designated a National Treasure, and climb the stairs to the third floor for panoramic views of the lake and surroundings. While touring the castle premises, you can also pay a visit to the museum to observe an array of relics from the past, or take a walk in the scenic gardens, which boast an ornamental pond and nine bridges. • One castle inside the 12 castles of the existing castle is maintained, but it is a little difficult to walk underfoot. The stairs to the castle tower are quite steep and painful for an old man. In addition to the castle, there are places to see, and there is a castle that you want to visit.

  • The stone steps continued to the castle tower, and when I thought that I finally went inside, it was a steep staircase. It is when the foot is not strong. From the entrance of the castle tower, the staff were waiting one by one on each floor. When I thought that there was a person who fell down the stairs, it seems to be watching not to do graffiti etc. It is true that there are graffiti in English, katakana, and kanji everywhere. I was very disappointed that there were people who did such an act even though it was designated as a national treasure. It is a wonderful place as other people have written, so let's observe everyone's manners.

  • Great example of one of the remaining 12 original castles in Japan. Between the castle and associated buildings and the gardens you can easily spend 3-4 hours here. Lots of uneven stairs and paths to climb so you need to be able to move OK.
  • A designated national treasure & one of key castles in Japan. It’s a well preserved wooden superstructure, but extremely steep to climb the stairs inside the main castle tower. It’s fairly well maintained, gorgeous & yet peaceful to walk around inside. It’s a good place to have a panoramic city view & watch the sunset.
