Located in Panfilov Park, Ascension Cathedral represents a rare religious structure made entirely out of wood, without any nails or metal components. Built in the late 19th century, the tall cathedral was used as a museum after the Communist revolution, but the Russian Orthodox Church restored its original purpose and publically reopened it in 1997. Explore the lavish Tardis-like interior assembled by artists and carpenters from Moscow and Kiev, and absorb the atmosphere infused with quiet religious chants and burned incense. Inspect the sacred relics and frescoes, along with elaborate gold and pearl paintings of the Virgin Mary. Respect the dress code during your visit. Ascension Cathedral Reviews
Absolutely beautiful now that the renovations have been complete. Park setting is ok. You can buy food for the pigeons. Visit the war memorial while you are there too. more »
One of the only buildings to survive the earthquake. in beginning of 1900. Used as museum during Sovjet time, now fully renovated with "modern" bright colors. more »
It is the highest wooden orthodox church worldwide as far as I know. Very beautiful place for sightseeing and pray
Really nice and peaceful Orthodox cathedral in downtown Almaty. The interior and the exterior are beautifully decorated. After visiting the cathedral, be sure to spend some time going around the surrounding park, which is beautiful as well and makes for a very pleasant walk.
