Bauska Castle is a complex consisting of the ruins of an earlier castle and a later palace on the outskirts of the Latvian city of Bauska.
The castle, the remains of which were recently restored, stands on the narrow peninsula at the confluence of the rivers Mūša and Mēmele where they form the Lielupe river. In ancient times, the hill was the site of an ancient Semigallian fortress. The first stone buildings were established between 1443 and 1456 by the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Knights and construction continued till the end of the 16th century. The old section of the castle featured a great watch tower, 3.5 meter thick walls, a prison under the tower, a garrison and a drawbridge at the gates.
Construction started under the rule of the Master of the Livonian Order, Heidenreich Vinke von Overberg (1439 – 1450). The castle was intended to strengthen the Order's power over Semigallia, to protect the border with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and to control the trade route from Lithuania to Riga. The castle was both the military stronghold and the administrative centre of the area.
After the collapse of the Livonian Order in 1562, Bauska Castle became one of the residences of the Dukes of Courland, for whom a new adjacent wing was built in the 17th century. In 1568, 1590 and 1601 the Landtags of Duchy of Courland and Semigallia were held here.

  • I visited a few months ago with my girlfriend for the Zobens un Lemess festival, so probably didn't get the full castle experience. That being said though, it's a pleasant ground with some nice...  more »
  • It's interesting and nice museum. Very nice that we had translations to our language and we could know something about this castle history.  more »

  • Beautiful castle on the river side in Bauska. A half of the castle is renovated and is ready for visitors. The entrance price is €4 at the moment until all castle will be renovated. The old part of the castle is nice to see too as it’s original castle remains! Inside the castle is museum and a small cafe. Museum could have more information in English and directions where is allowed to go. I think if staff would speak in English would be easier for tourists. All staff are dressed in old times clothes which makes you to feel the spirit of old times. The castle is nice to visit just once as here is not too much to see, but around the castle or in the castles yard is happening some events over the weekends. But definitely worth to visit!
  • Although it is not the original building but reconstructed one it was still interesting to visit this place. Not so packed as Rundala castle. You can walk through the old castle which has really good descriptions everywhere of the rooms, the history and the displays. Still, the majority of the texts were in Lithuanian, some without any translation, it was still an awesome place to visit. The staff English was a bit weak but at least we were able to talk in Russian and learn more about the venue. In the time of our visit there was also a wine and grape demonstration which was interesting to see and have a taste of different ones.
