An ornate example of Gothic architecture within the historical city center, St. Anne's Church and its red brick spires represent one of Vilnius' most recognizable buildings. Originally constructed in 1500, the church survived multiple wars, conflicts, and 50 years of Soviet rule. Legend has it that the invading Napoleon found it so beautiful that he wished to send it brick-by-brick back to Paris for his own. Despite the outside, its interior is Baroque: keep an eye out for the ornate altar and carved wooden statues. Take in the sizeable stained-glass windows, high vaulted ceilings, and incorporation of the church's signature bricks into the arches themselves. This is the real deal! Not commercial, most things are handmade, often by children. Church has great energy. Lots of locals who come for mass and celebrations. They feel part of it and it feels part..... more »
Magnificent church. The impressive both as a structure as well as inside decoration. Definitely worth visiting. Over Vilnius is amazing and very joyful to wonder around.
It’s certainly an imposing building, especially from the front and the brickwork makes for some slightly more unique architecture in the city centre. During sunset the front of the building catches the sun beautifully making it stand out even more. The gothic design is certainly impressive and it’s worth a little detour to admire, plus there’s the benefit of a nice park at the rear.
