Parrocca San Pawl Nawfragu, Valletta

4.4
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Church
See the remains of St. Paul's wristbone and a portion of the column against which the saint, spiritual father of the nation, was executed at Parrocca San Pawl Nawfragu. Tracing its origins to the 1570s, the church is built in honor of St. Paul's shipwreck on the island, as described in the New Testament. Take time to admire the wooden statue of the saint and the mural of his life on the church ceiling. Descend down steep steps to the crypt underneath the church. Don't miss the stunning altarpiece by Matteo Perez d'Aleccio, paintings by Attilio Palombi, and the dome by Lorenzo Gafa. The church blends into surrounding buildings from the outside and can be difficult to find, so look carefully for signs directing you to the entrance. Make Parrocca San Pawl Nawfragu part of your personalized Valletta itinerary using our Valletta day trip planner.

  • This little church hidden in a side street in Valletta is now open in a reduced schedule, due to Covid-19, and you can only visit it in the morning.  more »
  • Other churches in Valletta are clearly better funded than St Paul's which looked tired and dull at first. It is a really special church and has much to see inside.  more »
