Parrocca San Pawl Nawfragu, Valletta

4.4
See the remains of St. Paul's wristbone and a portion of the column against which the saint, spiritual father of the nation, was executed at Parrocca San Pawl Nawfragu. Tracing its origins to the 1570s, the church is built in honor of St. Paul's shipwreck on the island, as described in the New Testament. Take time to admire the wooden statue of the saint and the mural of his life on the church ceiling. Descend down steep steps to the crypt underneath the church. Don't miss the stunning altarpiece by Matteo Perez d'Aleccio, paintings by Attilio Palombi, and the dome by Lorenzo Gafa. The church blends into surrounding buildings from the outside and can be difficult to find, so look carefully for signs directing you to the entrance. • Interesting church. You walk in a small door, get into a small side ship or the like and then open the church space. As an added bonus, we came while there was God's service. We are Christians, but not Catholics, so it was interesting to be allowed to consider the rituals at a respectful distance. Certainly worth a visit whether there is worship or not.
