Palancar Reef, Cozumel

#1 of 170 in Wildlife in Cozumel
Must see · Reef · Geologic Formation
Home to a riotous array of tropical ocean life, Palancar Reef stands as one of the world's most renowned locations for underwater exploration. Consisting of four different coral clusters, the reef lies approximately 1 km (0.6 mi) from shore, and teems with turtles, sharks, eels, and an array of multi-colored fish. You can join a snorkeling excursion from the island in order to explore the reef's shallower stretches, while scuba divers can range to depths of up to 34 m (110 ft) and even swim through massive coral arches in some places. Either way, you'll have a great view of the reef thanks to the surrounding water's visibility of 70 m (230 ft)--among the farthest on the planet. • Like all other dives in the area, Palancar reef is a great dive! You can swim through coral archways. I saw the biggest Lion fish I've ever seen here.  more »
  • Amazing diving here! Just so alive... with other areas around the world bleaching... even just across the water off of playa del carmen it is not as alive.  more »
