Prince's Palace, Monaco-Ville

Take an audio tour of Prince's Palace, occupied for more than 700 years by the ruling Grimaldi family. Built on the site of an 1191 Genoese fortress, the palace is still well fortified--it was frequently besieged over the centuries by Monaco’s larger and more powerful neighbors. Imposing from the outside, the royal family's only residence also displays wealth and opulence in its interior, furnished in the style of Louis XIV. Explore the state apartments, where you can see intricately painted 16th-century frescoes of mythological figures, and see the throne, draped with a red velvet awning and topped by the crown. The palace is only open to the public for a few months a year, so check the website for details. • I enjoyed the tour we went on and yes it should have been longer. I was happy that we got to go in period! I didn't know how to get there and we walked up all the stairs and it was hot and no shade. B...  more »
  • I took a bus from Nice to Monaco, but I think it's best to start exploring Monaco from this first stop, the Grand Duke's Palace. If you get off the bus and walk a little, you will find a gentle slope on your right, so if you climb up while looking at the Port of Monaco, you will reach this Grand Duke's Palace. Built on the rocks of the Monacoville area, you can enjoy the stunning views of Monaco from the salty after arrival. I recommend it!

  • Very scenic walk up to the palace. Great views to be had at all if the stops. The palace itself has the change of guard which occurs every day around midday, but crowds build up so be sure to get there early for a decent spot.
  • A nice place to visit. You have the palace, a garden, a church and some alleys to walk through. It is worth a visit and you have some lovely views from up there. We saw the change of guards 'ceremony', it was OK but for me not worth the wait.
