Vieux Monaco, Monaco-Ville

4.5
#4 of 6 in Historic Sites in Monaco
With narrow, winding streets virtually unchanged since medieval times, Vieux Monaco, the city's Old Town, encompasses many of Monaco's most famous and historical attractions. Variously known as Le Rocher, the Rock, and originally Monoikos, the Old Town dates back to the 6th century, when it was colonized by the Phocaeans. Wander steep, quiet streets that are too narrow for modern vehicles, and take in the views from this vantage point above the sea. Containing Palais Princier, Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Oceanographic Museum, Chapelle de la Misericorde, and Fort Antoine Theatre, the Old Town offers a chance to explore the city's history within a setting of medieval beauty. Be sure to wear flat, comfortable shoes, as the streets are steep, and it's quite a climb. • The views are extraordinary - sublime sights all along the road from Nice to Monaco screw sail. Monaco in particular looks gorgeous from the top. A drive with imperishable views, absolutely to do if you are in this area. Driving is easy as long as you have a minimum of skills. The visit to Monaco after putting the car in the garage was worth the trip for photos and shots.

  • Immediately from the princely palace goes a very narrow street and takes you directly to the cafes and a small bazaar with souvenirs, the prices are very democratic. You go to the Cathedral of Monaco and to the courthouse. You can walk down there a small park with great views and different types of cacti. Then there is the theatre and the ocean museum.

  • Another great museum though on the smaller side. Regardless of the limited space, it has been utilized to optimal perfection. Well done and another of those "must visit in my lifetime" locations.
  • Very nice. Small and cosy. Unassuming.
