Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Auckland Region / Auckland / Auckland War Memorial Museum
Learn about New Zealand's rich history at Auckland War Memorial Museum, serving as both a major cultural institution and a war memorial. Designed in the 1920s as a commanding neoclassical temple, this structure features an impressive copper dome, added in 2007. The ground floor, dedicated to the Auckland area's natural and military history, houses impressive displays of Maori artifacts, including a war canoe and a carved meeting house (which you can enter only after removing your shoes). The upper levels feature more military exhibits and a display about the region's volcanic fields, including a fascinating simulation of an eruption. For the sake of convenience, take a guided highlights tour, included in your admission ticket. Plan a Auckland trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

New Zealand's history, in particular, has brought many new facts. Personally, the exhibitions about Maoris and Polynesium have told us a lot new. Be sure to book the Maoris' live show!

Amazing place for adults and kids. You can easily spend a whole day. The kids section is really good. The staff at the reception were very helpful. Only downside is you can’t take food and drinks inside which is understandable, but would prefer some allowance for parents with younger kids.
There is a great deal of history here as well as quite a lot about the cultures in the South Pacific. It is a great first stop for visitors to learn more about New Zealand. I would recommend a tour as the amount of reading can be a bit staggering. Some of the exhibits are quite small, but the overall size of the museum is quite large. There's a good deal of construction going on currently, so I'm sure the museum will expand and have even more to offer.
