Head down The 309 Road for a representative trip through Coromandel Peninsula's diverse natural landscape. The winding gravel road provides ample photographic opportunities, walks, a stop at Waiau Falls, and special sightings of the area's natural inhabitants. Chief among the attractions along the 22 km (14 mi) road is the grove of 600-year-old kauri trees, standing tall, wide, and proud against the remoteness of the area. Make sure to wash the soles of your shoes before approaching them: the endangered trees can become diseased when met with non-native pests. Take extra precautions when driving, as the winding road has no safety barriers, making it potentially dangerous--particularly for those unfamiliar with the route.   OK, it’s a gravel road, with few sealed sections. After rain, which is most of the time, the going can be slippery. You also need to be reasonably competent and confident. Plus, if you’ve rented a car...  more »

  We were actually on our way the Driving Creek Train and google maps took us through this way! What an adventure! We stopped at the pretty waterfall.  more »
