Durie Hill Elevator & Elevator Tower, Whanganui

4.4
Ride up to panoramic views on Durie Hill Elevator & Elevator Tower, New Zealand's first public underground elevator. Soak up views of the Tasman Sea and surrounding mountains on the platform at the end of the line, and climb the adjacent 33.5 m (110 ft) memorial tower for an even greater vantage point. Built in 1919, the elevator represents a historical local landmark as well as an important local thoroughfare. If you need some exercise, a 191-step walkway also accesses the hilltop, so feel free to take the elevator up and the stairs down, or vice-versa. • Lovely staff manning this historic elevator. The Anzac tunnel is really interesting - great for kooky perspective photography or echo play.  more »

  • If you want to see Whanganui from above this is the place.Your choice -elevator up or down. I chose walking the 176 steps up and climbing the inner stairs to top of tower.Amazing panoramic views of not only Whanganui but also Ruapaehu and outer regions. Going down I took the oldest working elevator in NZ.There is an attendant.once down there is a long tunnel and on emerging there are Maori totems on either side of walkway.Well worth the climb or elevator ride.
  • Fabulous views of whole of Whanganui from here. Great site, nice, clean and well maintained site. Loved the 176 step tower climb. If you're visiting here, take a water bottle along with you. Public toilets just by the corner, clean facilities. Free parking available at the site. If you're superstitious then take a padlock or two with your partner or family and lock it up on the tower 😍
