Tucked away in a mountain sacred for the Koreans, Pohyonsa Temple boasts a significant history. Once a great center of Buddhism, the temple dates back to 1024 and the Koryo dynasty. In the 16th century, it served as a stronghold for warrior monks defending the country from Japanese invasions--look for the shrine that still honors them. Shrapnel scars on the stele stand as a memento of U.S. bombs, which in 1951 destroyed most of the complex. Today, enjoy the peaceful, well-maintained area, featuring various halls and shrines around a central lawn. The original buildings among them, including the pagodas from the 11th and 14th centuries, are designated national treasures. This site presents admirable invoice timber structures, characterized by beautiful décor which, unlike those that can be seen in the forbidden city in Beijing, were not heavily recolored. The famous Tabo pagoda, opposite the Hall Manse, looks back almost a thousand years of history. You can pray inside the temple.
Probably the most authentic place I've seen in the country. The temple has such a serene energy , one could tell the practice has been maintained strong and real. Many others were put down throughout history. Glad this one still stands.
Buddhist Temple with interesting history. You might see brides and grooms getting married. Beautifully dressed custodian giving captivating talks. Small but worth a visit while you are near.
