Kokoda Track, Papua New Guinea

4.7
#2 of 22 in Parks in Papua New Guinea
Trek the world-famous Kokoda Track, a rugged and challenging 96 km (59 mi) trail through the Owen Stanley Ranges. A World War II battle between the Japanese and Allies occurred in this location in 1942. Start the trail from either end in Kodoka or Owers Corner and pass around the rocky peak of Mount Bellamy. Basic guesthouses and campsites are provided along the trail, and stop by villages to buy fruit and vegetables. Be prepared with raingear and extreme temperatures, as local weather includes hot days and cold nights. If you are unfamiliar with the trail, hire a tour operator and experienced guide.
