Visit the wild and eclectic Belen. The vast marketplace is part of the Belen district, also known as the "Venice of Latin America" for its often flooded streets and homes built on stilts. After touring the Itaya River's watery environs by boat, disembark on dry land to take in the gritty culture of the impoverished Belen neighborhood and immerse yourself in the smells and sounds of the lively marketplace. You can find almost everything in the numerous rows of stands expanding over several streets, especially fruits, vegetables and animal products. Purchase locally grown produce, exotic fruit, fresh fish, or colorful spices. Strolling the crowded market you might see controversial animal products, local delicacies, "magic" potions, vibrant clothing, and many other memorable things unavailable anywhere else.
