Get in touch with ancient Peruvian history and culture with a visit to Museo Larco. The museum, known in particular for its expansive collection of ceramics dating back some 4,000 years, stands above an ancient pre-Columbian pyramid in an 18th-century viceroy's mansion. You can also see some remarkable hand-woven tapestries, as well as gold and jewels highlighting the wealth of some of Peru's ancient civilizations. Those looking for a more risque encounter can check out the collection of ancient erotic art pieces, which depict sex acts without shame or censorship. Enhance your experience with a guided tour of the museum, available in English. Museo Larco Reviews
For me the best museum in Lima, a must see! Interesting after the visit to admire the incredible amount of artifacts in the adjacent warehouse more »
This is a don't miss in Lima. Very well curated. Amazing pieces on display telling the preColumbian evolution. A guide is helpful but a not must. Don't miss the storage area. Simply mind blowing. more »
Great museum with detailed notes on all the artefacts in over 8 languages. They also offer guided tours in English and Spanish for an extra 10 soles. The erotic sculpture area is particularly fascinating, despite it being kind of hard to be mature about (depending on the company you are with!). The garden is also very gorgeous. Overall a very informative learning experience! Note that they make you check your bags and you are not allowed to wear a hat inside. This is free and in a secured room. It is pretty difficult to get to on public transit, so take a cab! They also always have cabs waiting outside so don't let your taxi driver convince you to pay extra so they will wait for you to do the return trip!
This relatively small museum packs quite a lot of information. It has well marked exhibits and gives one a reasonable understanding of history of various civilizations beyond Inca (including a section on erotic pottery). Though their explanations provide enough context, we also took their guided tour and our guide was a wealth of knowledge (his pro tip for those interested was, if possible travel to Peru's north for less visited but awesome history). As a bonus they have a beautiful cafe that can round ones afternoon or evening with nice refreshments.
