See if you can solve the mystery of a long-gone culture at Cementerio Chauchilla, a cemetery containing pre-Columbian mummified human remains and other artifacts from the period. Discovered in the 1920s, the site was used for around 600 to 700 years by the Nazca culture, the last time in the 9th century. The remains are well preserved due to the dry desert climate and various aspects of the funeral rites performed by the culture. With hair and skin still visible on the bodies in these open tombs, this cultural exhibit is a powerful introduction into the belief system of a native culture. • A very unusual place visit. Fascinating but a little grim. Shame the authorities don’t seem to pay much attention to the pieces of bone and pottery outside of the burial pits.  more »

  • This place is very cool!! It's crazy how you can pretty much walk on the trails they have marked and on both sides are bones and pieces of bones all over the place. It's hard to believe that a place like this even exists. When we went we were the only people there, we had the whole place to ourselves to explore. I believe we were there for about an hour, I wouldn't see why needing to be there any longer would be the case. It was very hot that day, and each of the main tombs had a shaded area to keep them preserved a little better. I would recommend this to anyone that wants a unique sightseeing trip. Its not for everyone though..
  • Very interesting the dry desert air keeps the mommies intact 30 minutes drive from Nazca look out for desert Owls once off the main road.
