Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Northern Portugal / Porto District / Vila Nova de Gaia / Ferreira Cellars
Sample and learn about one of Portugal's most famous traditional products at Ferreira Cellars, a wine-making estate specializing in port. Founded in 1751, the company boasts a long pedigree in the important regional industry. Take a cellar tour, which gives you background information on the growing and production processes. You'll see the storage facilities where the wine is aged. Afterward, you can taste of several different port varieties, depending on the specific tour, and maybe even get a glimpse of the site's 19th-century tasting room. Be sure to book online ahead of time, especially if you'd like to arrange a private group tour. Add Ferreira Cellars to your Vila Nova de Gaia travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Vila Nova de Gaia day trip website.

Ferreira Cellars reviews
We booked the tour including tasting of 5 port wines. The wines were quite good (But I am not an expert) and the guide was friendly and answered all questions. However, the price of the tour was... more »
What a race. Having spent some time reading about the history of this cellar I was really looking forward to this visit. I booked the premium experience for 2 people The guide was monotone and... more »
Interesting tour of an iconic Port brand so you get to know its history & how it's made (using a pure alcohol to mix with local white or red grapes). The different styles & ages are explained. Some are very complex having been kept in oak barrels of different sizes before bottling when they continue to rest & age well. Surprisingly smooth & not sweet like many sherries. The underground complex extends some way back so when you finish you realise you are in a very elevated place well away from the Douro where you entered the Winery. Tour Guides are all good & speak perfect English.
Staff uninterested in helping nor assisting during the purchase of a bottle. 5 staff members in the tasting area and behind the counter, all to interested in talking to each other or on the phone. We only wanted to buy a bottle, not a full tasting or tour. Staff wouldn't allow us to have a small sample prior to buying a full bottle. They said they were full but the tasting area had 1 table only. We tasted 3 different ports the day before so we already knew what we liked, but we wanted to taste an older bottle prior to investing the money. Other port companies in the area are more friendly and actually give you a taste. Good port, horrible staff and service. Bad experience.
