Sucevita Monastery, Sucevita

The last of the 22 painted churches of Bucovina, Sucevita Monastery features the largest number of murals on the green background of its exterior and interior walls. See thousands of 16th-century painted images illustrating biblical events, including the depiction of red-winged angels escorting the righteous up the ladder to paradise. High and thick walls with a tower in each corner surround the entire complex. A museum inside the monastery displays a collection of historical artifacts and art objects, such as illuminated manuscripts, ecclesiastical silverware, and tomb covers with portraits of Ieremia, ruling prince of Moldavia, embroidered in silver thread. • The monastery is spectacular and very beautiful, however as British tourists we felt very unwelcome. The nuns were rude, tutting and rolling their eyes at us and would not help us. Make sure you wear a long skirt or trousers, and cover your shoulders. Also make sure you purchase a photo permission for outside and do not take any photos inside. It was a shame some of it was covered in scaffolding but the rest of it was stunning.
  • One of the wonders of Romania. One of the most important monuments of this country. Definetely needs to be visited at least once in a lifetime. I visited this place some long time ago when I was a kid and I was impressed about the exterior pictures of this church. Now the painting is not in the best possible shape, but still can impress a lot of people.
