A fortified complex at the heart of the city, Moscow Kremlin (Moskovsky Kreml) serves as the official residence of the country's president, and is designated as a World Heritage Site. Overlooking the city's central square, this "fortress inside a city," as its name roughly translates, includes five palaces and four cathedrals. The giant complex sits on the north bank of the Moscow River, enclosed by a protective brick wall just over 2 km (1.2 mi) long. Although the best views of the exterior are from the other side of the river, be sure to visit the citadel's museums to see collections of Russian state regalia, arms, and armor. Check the website for special events and guided tours. Put Moscow Kremlin (Moskovsky Kreml) and other Moscow attractions into our Moscow trip itinerary planner , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Worth a visit definitely. Became a little over frescoed though ! Free paper guides to take away. No photography, although some did (of course).  more »
  • In the evening, the Red Square is particularly atmospheric. All buildings are festively illuminated and the architectural details are even more prominent. Don't miss this walk from above down to St. Basil's Cathedral, especially if you love romance.

  • Amazing to visit. The architecture is stunning and it’s a marvel that some of the buildings are over 500 years old. Highly recommend a tour or audio guide as it’s a little hard to work out some of the history without it. The ticket office was also way too hot and small. I’d booked my ticket in advance online so it only took 20 minutes to collect but others on the day queued a few hours. Then the entrance in wasn’t too clear either. Shouldn’t be too hard to sort out.
  • Really interesting. Be careful because of the police isn't so nice. You can see so many things. But go there when good weather is. It's better!
