Patriarch's Pond, Moscow

Stroll down pathways shaded by trees at Patriarch's Pond, immortalized by writer Mikhail Bulgakov in his world-famous novel "The Master and Margarita." Look for the road sign that says "Do not talk to strangers," showing the silhouettes of the novel's devil and his henchmen. The pond, surrounded by a wide path with benches, also features a boathouse made of stone. You can see statues of Bulgakov and Ivan Krylov, a 19th-century Russian children's writer, near the pond. Have a drink at the cafe Margarita, another reference to the famous novel. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Moscow holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Patriarch's Pond and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Previously, the area was a goat swamp, but in 1673 it was drained and smashed three fish ponds. After the fire of 1812 two ponds fell asleep, there was one - the Great Patriarch. That's what we're seeing now.

  • I could not pass by, or rather to say, purposefully sought here. Yes, thanks in large part to Bulgakov, in trying to feel the atmosphere that is described in the novel. And yes, it feels implicit, but still is. And it's just a pleasant place to walk:)

  • This place is relly beautiful and calm. It is absolutely recommendable for romance at night and for meditation and solitude during the day. A simple moment in any day with a walk around this spot may be just enough to boost your mood.
  • Nice lake, small but charming. It has alot of meaning for the Russian history and literature so don't wonder seeing people with books open. Great to seat and rest.
