Once the summer residence of Russian monarchs, Grand Peterhof Palace and Gardens forms part of a sprawling complex of buildings and gardens recognized as a World Heritage Site. Built on the orders of Peter the Great, the 30-room palace underwent a series of renovations under Catherine the Great, who slightly toned down the glittering halls and elaborately decorated chambers. Seriously damaged during World War II, the renovated palace now offers guided tours of its galleries, filled with original art and furniture. The main hall notably houses twelve large paintings depicting scenes from a major naval battle of the Russo-Turkish War.
