Saint Isaac's Cathedral, St. Petersburg

4.8
#3 of 3,845 in Museums in Russia
Famous for its gold-plated dome, Saint Isaac's Cathedral features an observation deck offering arguably the finest views of the city. Built during the first four decades of the 19th century, the cathedral remains one of the largest Orthodox edifices in the world, its golden cupola dominating the city's skyline from a height of over 101 m (333 ft). Designated as a museum during the 1930s, the lavish interior features highly decorated granite and marble columns and pilasters. Pay special attention to the main iconostasis, framed by eight ornate columns of semiprecious malachite and lazurite stone. To reach the observation deck, climb the staircase winding its way around the drum of the dome. • The Issak Cathedral in St. Petersburg impresses with its large open hall alone, as well as the golden dome that can be seen from a wide era. Also impressive are the approx. 40 sqm large doors - area corresponds to an average St. Petersburg apartment.

  • Wow! The museum is SO IMPRESSIVE. The atmosphere is magical and there is so much to see. Almost makes you feel small. When you climb the cathedral, which is not as exhausting as I expected, you get an amazing view. It can be a bit scary if you are afraid of heights like me but nevertheless the place is amazing.
  • Awesome Place. Very grand & detailed. We were lucky to attend part of the mass too. The best cathedral that I've ever been to yet. Glad I got to visit. Icing on the cake is the view after climbing 240 odd steps which can be easily covered by children & elders both, since the steps are small. Takes 5-8 minutes max to reach the top. Must visit place in St. Petersburg.
