Agostinho Neto, Roca Agostinho Net

#21 of 28 in Things to do in Sao Tome Island
Ranch · Tourist Spot
One of the largest cocoa plantations in Africa, Agostinho Neto boasts a rich and interesting history. Founded in 1865, it was originally known as Rio D' Ouro, but the name was changed to honor the first president of Angola. You can see the decayed remains of a former 1920s hospital, with two wings and different sections, as well as smaller buildings, such as the workers' homes. An image of the hospital features on the 5,000 Dobra note. Although today most of the complex has fallen into disuse, it serves as a reminder of the once grand industrial site, with its own railroad and almost 5,000 employees.
