Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Ljubljana

4.5
#2 of 24 in Historic Sites in Ljubljana
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Visit one of the city's landmarks and a prime example of mature Baroque in Slovenia at Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Modeled after Rome's most famous Jesuit church Il Gesu, the building replaced an earlier Gothic church, dominating the skyline with its twin towers and green dome. The most prominent features of the exterior are the elaborately decorated wooden and bronze doors and Roman tombstones built in the exterior walls. Notice the keystone with Christ near the entrance, which was preserved from the older church. The Gothic pieta and statues of significant bishops and saints stand in the niches of the facade. The interior features a painted dome and the altar of Corpus Christi surrounded by angels. • It was so nice to find this unexpected Lee beautiful church while visiting Ljubljana. Stop by and sit inside for a few minutes if you have time to visit this beautiful town.
  • The main cathedral of Ljubljana. Not as grand as other cathedrals around Europe but still worth a visit as they're the main one. Good to check the opening timing before you visit because they're not always open and they charge an entrance fee to the interior. The interior structure is really nice and inspiring, and they have seats for you to reflect and take in the atmosphere. I would say that they're not as tourist friendly as they still use the church for worship, so do take note and be courteous when you're inside.
