Necropolis of Nuri, Merowe

#6 of 8 in Things to do in Northern State
World heritage site · Cemetery · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
Necropolis of Nuri, UNESCO cultural heritage site since 2003, contains burial pyramids of Nubian kings and queens. The pyramids differ a lot from Egyptian ones, as they are smaller and there are in a poorer state. However, you can still see the royal burial grounds and items used in funeral ceremonies. See the first pyramid on the site of Taharqa, an ancient pharaoh. Other royal members' and rulers' pyramids were built according to the position of Taharqa's. You'll notice the smaller pyramids, a bit far from his, made for people of lesser rank. Planning Merowe trip won't be overwhelming when you use Inspirock's itinerary maker.
