Commewijne River, Paramaribo

4.2
#1 of 16 in Parks in Suriname
Head along the banks of Commewijne River and past the plantations for a raft of colonial museums, lush parks, and restaurants. While water taxis are probably the easiest way to tour the river and its banks, energetic visitors can consider exploring on bikes--available for rent in town. Vistors have reported common dolphin sightings in the river's waters, so take a camera along and try to capture one on film. • Beautiful river to take a boat trip and spot dolphins. Nice to see the confluence of the rivers.

  • The spotting of dolphins on the Commewijne River is a permanent part of the boat ride from plantation 'Rest and work' to Frederiksdorp. They are the brackish water or guiana dolphins, called Profosu in Suriname, which occur here at the common mouth of the Suriname and Commewijne river in the sea. They are quite small, grey dolphins with a mostly pink and sometimes white belly. Although the animals are protected all year round, their survival is threatened by fishing nets, collisions with boats and the increasing pollution of the rivers. Our guide already prepared us that there are sometimes no dolphin watching during such a tour. Fortunately, some specimens surfaced, but then a kind of 'cat and mouse game' between the boat and the dolphins begins to see them not only up close, but also to be able to capture them in the photo. If you stick after it, they suddenly dive under the boat to resurface in another place, etc. My tip: don't forget to include the river and lushly overgrown banks with a lot of beautiful birds in you.
