Neveh Shalom Jewish Synagogue, Paramaribo

4.6
Observe the deep Jewish roots of the Surinamese capital by visiting Neveh Shalom Jewish Synagogue, a place of worship established and built by the Ashkenazi community of Jews in Paramaribo in 1719. Head inside and survey the unusual sandy floor--purportedly a reminder of the Hebrews' 40 years spent in the desert after exodus from Egypt. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore one of the oldest synagogues in the Western hemisphere. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Paramaribo trip simple and quick.

  • Right next to the beautiful synagogue Neveh Shalom in Paramaribo is a beautiful mosque. This can probably only be in Suriname and it certainly testifies to respect for each other's religion. For our group we had arranged a tour. This was provided by the local administrator, who in Dutch led us in an enthusiastic way through the monumental, very well maintained building. A guide is almost a must; Especially if you are not aware of the Jewish rituals and use and also want to bring something of history into experience. Thus, the prayer house in its present form was consecrated in 1837 and actually only completed in 1842. Now the Jewish community is so small (still about 200 people) that a service is only occasionally held. To be traced is this community at the advent of the first group in the 17th century, as descendants of Jews were fleeing the Spanish Inquisition and who originally came through Brazil from the Netherlands, Portugal and Italy. The interior is beautiful and the white sand is particularly interspersed on the floors and also on the elevations. The sand works sound dampening and makes the floors easy to keep clean. On special request We also got to see the sacred "Tora" rolls tucked away in a closed shrine. Finally, he also told them that they had good appointments with the neighbouring mosque to make use of each other's parking lot at special festivities. In that context, he gives us tips on where we can make the best pictures on the ground to get both buildings on one picture. A visit to the present museum and the souvenir shop made the tour and visit complete. A visit to this synagogue is worth the effort.

  • I don't believe the building is normally open for visits. It is net to see this large, impressive synagogue next door to the grand city mosque.  more »

  • Went during the open monument day and had a splendid guided tour. Guided tours are available on select days at certain times. Beautiful Synagogue, worth a visit.
  • Must see even from the outside. You can go in I think they close at 2 pm.
