Empakaai Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

#4 of 7 in Things to do in Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Geologic Formation · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Admire the views from the rim of Empakaai Crater, whose lake draws waterfowl such as flamingoes and pelicans. Hike down the sides of the forested cliffs, where a well-maintained trail provides plenty of bird-watching and wildlife spotting--including hyenas, blue monkeys, and elephants. The trek down to the shore takes about 30 minutes, and twice that to ascend again. You can also walk around the lake, which takes about four hours. Note that hiking here requires you to hire an armed ranger first--do so at the ranger post in Nainokanoka.
