On the northern edge of the Pyrénées, Pau is the perfect base to explore the mountains and ride the Funiculaire de Pau, a unique historic funicular railway that links the city center and Boulevard des Pyrénées to the railway station Gare de Pau.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Les Gorges de Kakuetta and Centre Nautique de Soeix. Take a break from the city and head to Grotte de La Verna and La Pecherie d'Aurit. Get out of town with these interesting Pau side-trips: Musee du Sel et des Traditions Bearnaises (in Salies-de-Bearn) and Passerelle d'Holzarte (in Larrau). Explore hidden gems such as Villa Arnaga and La Corniche Basque d'Urrugne. Take a break from the city and head to La Grande Plage and Grottes d'Oxocelhaya et d'Isturits.
