Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 27th (Mon): explore the striking landscape of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, view the masterpieces at Hakone Craft House, then don't miss a visit to Oyama Afuri Shrine, and finally contemplate the long history of Daiyuzan Saijoji Temple (Doryoson).

You can do a combination of train and bus from Tokyo to Hakone-machi in 2 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a train. While traveling from Tokyo, expect a bit cooler days and about the same nights in Hakone-machi, ranging from highs of 15°C to lows of 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Tue) to allow time to travel to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Visiting Mt. Wakakusa and Mount Hiei will get you outdoors. Popular historic sites such as Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple and Omiwa Shrine are in your itinerary. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Kinpusenji Temple (in Yoshino-cho), Sai Shrine (in Sakurai) and Kashihara Jingu (in Kashihara). There's much more to do: let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour, contemplate the long history of Keage Incline, take in the spiritual surroundings of Yasakanoto, and admire the masterpieces at Miho Museum.

Traveling by train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or fly. When traveling from Hakone-machi in April, plan for a bit warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto: temperatures range from 22°C by day to 11°C at night. On the 2nd (Sat), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can take a train to Nagano.
