Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Quetzaltenango: Parque Ecologico Chuiraxamolo (in Santa Clara La Laguna) and Fuentes Georginas (in Zunil). There's much more to do: cool off at Xocomil, contemplate the waterfront views at Laguna Chicabal, look for gifts at Yabal Handicrafts, and pause for some photo ops at Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango.

Drive from Lanquin to Quetzaltenango in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of shuttle and bus. Traveling from Lanquin in March, things will get much colder in Quetzaltenango: highs are around 73°F and lows about 43°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Sat) so you can drive to Retalhuleu.
