A castle town, Matsumoto possesses one of the best-preserved feudal structures in the country, and maintains its historical attractions and traditions while simultaneously exuding a modern, cosmopolitan charm.
Venture out of the city with trips to Chihiro Art Museum Azumino (in Matsukawa-mura), Nagano (Matsushiro Castle, Zenko-ji Temple, &more) and Daiho-ji Temple (in Aoki-mura). There's much more to do: take in the pleasant sights at Matsumoto Castle, get to know the fascinating history of Naraijuku, steep yourself in history at Kaichi Gakko Primary School, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Suwa Shrine.
