You can take a train from Tokyo to Kanazawa in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. Plan for a bit cooler nights when traveling from Tokyo in May since evenings lows in Kanazawa dip to 55°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Wed) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Myoshinji Temple and Yasakanoto. Get some cultural insight at Mii-dera Temple (Onjo-ji Temple) and Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple. Go for a jaunt from Kyoto to Yawata to see Iwashimizu Hachimangu about 44 minutes away. There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of Honen-in, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Jonangu Shrine, take a stroll through Shinbashi Dori, and admire the masterpieces at Byodo-in Temple Museum Hoshokan.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
On your second day here, stop by Yamasa Kamaboko Yumesenkan, contemplate the long history of Nishi no Maru, then steep yourself in history at Bizenmaru, then steep yourself in history at Yoneda Taishiji Temple, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Ishino Hoden Oishi Shrine.
