A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Venture out of the city with trips to Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery (in Yoichi-cho), Otaru (Otaru Canal, JR Otaru Station, & more) and Jigokudani (in Noboribetsu). The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Todai-ji Temple (in Nara), Chubu Park (in Toin-cho) and Jishu Shrine (in Otsu). There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, go for a walk through Arashiyama, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, and don't miss a visit to Nishiki Market Shopping District.

Kyoto is just a short distance from Osaka. In September, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 33°C, while at night they dip to 23°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Fri) so you can take a train to Hamamatsu.
