As the political and cultural capital of China, Beijing stands at the heart of Chinese history, buzzing with the energy of its high population density and centuries of importance.
Get some cultural insight at Mutianyu Great Wall and The Palace Museum. Visit Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) and Temple of Heaven for their historical value. There's still lots to do: get great views at Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang), stroll around Jingshan Park (Jingshan Gongyuan), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ming Tombs (Ming Shishan Ling), and take an in-depth tour of Lama Temple (Yonghegong).

Toronto, Canada to Beijing is an approximately 17-hour flight. You can also do a combination of ferry and flight; or do a combination of shuttle and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 13 hours traveling from Toronto to Beijing. Traveling from Toronto in October, expect nights in Beijing to be about the same, around 8°C, while days are a bit warmer, around 22°C. Historians often describe Xi'an, capital city for over a dozen dynasties, as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
On the 8th (Thu), get engrossed in the history at The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses and then steep yourself in history at Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanta). Keep things going the next day: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Daxuexixiang Mosque, then savor the flavors at Chateau de Coiffe Nivolle, and then explore the ancient world of Xi'an City Wall (Chengqiang).

You can fly from Beijing to Xi'an in 5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or drive. In October in Xi'an, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 10°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 9th (Fri) to allow enough time to travel to Zhangjiajie.

The cultural capital of the Naxi people, one of the 55 minority ethnic groups in the country, Lijang traces its history back over 800 years, with the city developing from a trading post on the ancient Southern Silk Road.
On the 13th (Tue), appreciate the history behind Sanyan Well, delve into the distant past at Beiyue Temple of Lijiang, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Puji Temple, Lijiang. On the 14th (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: go for a walk through Blue Moon Valley, then fly down the slopes at Yulong Snow Mountain Ski Area, then make a trip to Yuhe Square, and finally wander the streets of Ancient City Zhongyi Market.

Get outdoors at Jinji Lake and Huangpu Park. Shop till you drop at Former French Concession and Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road). Step out of Shanghai with an excursion to Master-of-Nets Garden in Suzhou--about 1h 45 min away.
